Fund Descriptions
Small-Company Stock Fund

This Fund invests in smaller companies—usually those that have a market capitalization of about $2 billion or less at the time of purchase,” explains portfolio manager Mark Ashton. “We look for stocks that are priced below what we consider to be their intrinsic value and for companies that are positioned to make a change in their business that will lead to an improvement in their competitive position or financial returns.”

This approach to selecting portfolio securities is often referred to as a value approach. For this Fund, the managers apply similar buy and sell discipline as the Value Fund; however the universe of investment candidates is different. This Fund concentrates on smaller sized companies.

“As value managers, we are looking for small-company stocks trading at prices that do not reflect the companies’ future growth prospects. But we also have to have some reason to believe that the share price will improve in a reasonable time frame. The catalyst for that change could be a refocused business plan, new management, a better business climate or the likelihood of a buy-out or merger.”

Investing in small-company stocks offers the potential for strong returns. Typically, small companies have fewer layers of management approval and are therefore able to respond to market and competitive conditions more quickly. However, there are also additional risks. Smaller companies typically have less diverse product lines and lack the “deep pockets” resources of large companies.
